I agree that they are using the title to draw crowds until one day it doesn’t work anymore.

I’ve read about the 7-11 stores in Asia and I”m jealous! There’s a 7-11 in my building, but sadly the only “fresh” food they have are hot dogs and pizza, which look like they are days old.

Comment on Return to sender: Denmark will eliminate universal mail service, ending a 400-year-old tradition by Jeff https://plainenglish.com/lessons/denmark-mail-delivery/#comment-18869 Sun, 08 Jun 2025 20:30:42 +0000 https://plainenglish.com/?post_type=lessons&p=27607#comment-18869 In reply to Igor Brum.

Landlines are a perfect analogy. I’m working with a nonprofit group now, helping them upgrade their tech, and we are moving them away from landlines altogether. The whole office will have just one physical phone (in the conference room) and we are moving all the staff to either Teams or Zoom. It’s 10x better and people won’t miss their old phones after a while.

I actually did see that part about Schwarzenegger movies being titled with “The Devil…” because it made the lease sense with the movie, “Junior” , a lighthearted comedy about a man getting pregnant after a scientific experiment. (I tried to work that into the episode, but I couldn’t find a way to explain it well enough!) I didn’t know about the Bruce Willis titles. It seems like they are trying to use the title to extend the star’s power to draw crowds.

Comment on Where are all the self-driving cars we were promised? by Jeff https://plainenglish.com/lessons/self-driving-future/#comment-18867 Sun, 08 Jun 2025 20:25:49 +0000 https://plainenglish.com/?post_type=lessons&p=27601#comment-18867 In reply to Igor Brum.

I think I would too! I would miss the sensation of being in control, the fun of driving out of town, but for convenience in a big city, you can’t beat the advantages (if they ever come). Also, you’re lucky to be able to read in the car – it makes me dizzy.

Comment on Amazon now has full control over James Bond’s future by Jeff https://plainenglish.com/lessons/amazon-james-bond/#comment-18866 Sun, 08 Jun 2025 20:24:57 +0000 https://plainenglish.com/?post_type=lessons&p=27598#comment-18866 In reply to Igor Brum.

That’s definitely true, and I think people will resist AI content with things they have an emotional connection to. The CEO of Duolingo posted on LinkedIn that he wants to make as many jobs as possible “AI first” and it caused a backlash from consumers. I think the same might happen in the arts, especially if people have a strong connection to a storyline like James Bond.

“paints a bleak picture” is a great way to use this term. I might change the order of this around and say, “The fight between Trump and Musk seems inconceivable. This episode paints a bleak picture for any investors in Musk’s companies.”

So true! A few tips for you:

1. “as balance as possible” is a good use of “as…as” but in this case, I’d say, “eat as balanced a diet as possible.”
2. “maintain us healthy” can be “keep us healthy” or “maintain our health”
3. “specially” is “especially”

Great work!
